Domestic Area Info & Layout
The Domestic Area at Palm Springs Airport is a crucial hub for handling domestic flights, featuring a unique open-air layout that distinguishes it from many other terminals. This area is divided into two main concourses: the Sonny Bono Concourse and the Regional Concourse, each catering to different types of aircraft and passenger needs.
Sonny Bono Concourse (Gates 4–11): Opened in 1999, this elevated concourse is designed to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family. It features 8 gates, all equipped with jet bridges. The concourse offers amenities including a full-service restaurant, a golf pro shop, and two newsstands. Passengers can access this concourse via an outdoor escalator and walkway, shaded by a distinctive roofline reminiscent of the architecture at Denver International Airport.
Regional Concourse (Gates 12–20): Located on the south side, this concourse is at tarmac level and primarily serves smaller aircraft like the Embraer ERJ and Bombardier CRJ. It has 11 gates, all hardstands, with 6 capable of handling larger aircraft up to the Airbus A321. The Regional Concourse provides amenities such as a restaurant, newsstand, and restrooms, with a fountain situated near its entrance. Boarding in this area is facilitated by ramps or airstairs.
The Domestic Area is accessible via the main building, which travelers can reach by road directly from Tahquitz Canyon Way or Kirk Douglas Way. After passing through security in the main building, passengers enter an open-air courtyard that connects to both concourses. This courtyard features a full-service restaurant, coffee shop, children's playground, and pet relief area, enhancing the travel experience with its open-air design.
Overall, the Domestic Area at Palm Springs Airport offers a blend of convenience and unique architectural features, making it a noteworthy point of transit for domestic travelers. The open-air concept and efficient layout ensure a pleasant journey from check-in to boarding.
