Avianca Airlines Pet Policy

Avianca Airlines allows pets to travel both in the cabin and as checked baggage, with certain restrictions and fees. If you are planning to travel with your pet, here's what you need to know:

Pets in Passenger Cabin: If your pet weighs less than 18 lbs (8 kg) and does not exceed 8" H (20 cm) in height, they can travel with you in the cabin. Each passenger is allowed to travel with 1 carrier in addition to their regular carry-on luggage. It is important to note that your pet must remain inside the carrier for the entire duration of the journey. The fee for this service varies depending on the destination, starting at $16 for domestic transportation and ranging from $45 to $200 for international flights.

Pets as Checked Baggage: If your pet exceeds the weight limit to travel in the cabin, they can be transported as checked baggage in the hold. To qualify for this option, animals must weigh between 22 lbs (10 kg) and 44 lbs (20 kg), not including the carrier, for flights less than 5 hours long. On Airbus A330 or Boeing B787 aircraft, the combined weight of pets and their carriers can be up to 101 lbs (46 kg). The fee for this service also varies depending on the destination, starting at $48 for domestic transportation and ranging from $60 to $235 for international flights.

Guidance, Tips, & info on Airlines and Airports

Allowed Weights & Dimensions: For pets traveling in the cabin, carriers must not exceed 16" x 12" x 8" (41 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm) and must be made of waterproof fabric with proper ventilation. Avianca offers carriers for sale at select airports for around $35. For pets traveling in the hold, carriers must be made with rigid materials such as fiberglass, metal, or plastic. They must weigh a maximum of 22 lbs (10 kg) and allow your pet to move freely. Additionally, carriers must be clean, leak-proof, have proper ventilation, and contain easily accessible water and food bowls.

Restrictions & Limitations: Avianca Airlines does not allow brachycephalic (snub-nosed) animals to fly as checked baggage or cargo in the airplane hold due to health risks. The following dog breeds are not permitted to travel in the hold: Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Deutscher Boxer Boxer, Dogue de Bordeaux, Griffon belge, King Charles Spaniel, Petit Brabançon, Tibetan Spaniel Spaniel, Bouledogue français, English bulldog, Chin, Doguillo, English Toy, Spaniel, Belgian Griffon, Pekingese, Pug, Tibetan, Bulldog, Brussels Griffon, Chinese Shar Pei, Dogue de Bordeaux, French Bulldog, Griffon of Brussels, Pekingese, and Japanese Spaniel.
