Japan Airlines Pet Policy

Japan Airlines, also known as JL, has specific policies in place for passengers who wish to travel with their pets. It is important to note that pets are not allowed to travel in the cabin with their owners.

If you are traveling with a pet, Japan Airlines allows animals to travel on both domestic and international flights as cargo, as long as they meet the necessary requirements. To arrange your pet's transport, you can contact the Cargo Department directly at (800) 525-3663.

When traveling as cargo, pets must be transported in carriers that are large enough for them to stand up, lie down, and turn around. The carriers must be made of durable materials such as plastic, fiberglass, wood, or similar strong materials, and they must be leak-proof. Additionally, the carriers must have proper ventilation, be lockable, and escape-proof.

It is important to note that Japan Airlines has restrictions on certain dog breeds. They do not accept the following breeds: Affenpinscher, Bordeaux Mastiff, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bull Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chin, Chow Chow, Italian Corso Dog, King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Mastiff, Pekingese, Perro de Presa Canario, Pit Bull Terrier, Pug, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Tibetan Prayer Dog.

In addition, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are not accepted in the cargo hold. Certain breeds such as Boxer, Doberman, Great Dane, Japanese Akita, Japanese Kishu, Japanese Tosa, Shepherd, and St. Bernard must always be transported in sturdy metal carriers.

If you are traveling with an emotional support dog, Japan Airlines welcomes them on flights departing from and arriving in the U.S. and Canada, as long as certain conditions are met. To ensure compliance, contact the airline at least 48 hours before your flight departs and fill out the form available on their website.

Keep in mind that air carriers can change these policies at any time, so you should always check directly with Japan Airlines before you book for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
