Southwest Airlines: Aircraft Fleet
Southwest Airlines is one of the largest low-cost carriers in the world, operating a fleet of modern and fuel-efficient aircraft. The airline has a total of 729 aircraft in its fleet, all of which are manufactured by Boeing.
The majority of Southwest's fleet consists of Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft, with 512 and 207 in service, respectively. The airline has also recently added the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to its fleet, with 34 currently in service and plans to add more in the future.
In addition to its current fleet, Southwest has made significant deals with Boeing to acquire more aircraft in the coming years. In March 2021, the airline announced a deal to purchase 100 Boeing 737 MAX 7 aircraft, with deliveries expected to begin in 2022. This deal also includes options for an additional 155 aircraft, which would bring Southwest's total order to 255.
Southwest's all-Boeing fleet allows for streamlined maintenance and training, as well as cost savings through bulk purchasing and maintenance agreements. The airline's commitment to modern and fuel-efficient aircraft also aligns with its sustainability goals, as it aims to reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact.
