TAP Air Portugal Pet Policy

Traveling with your beloved pet on TAP Air Portugal is a breeze once you understand the ins and outs of their pet policy. For both comfort and safety, certain requirements need to be met before you and your furry friend can take off to your next adventure.

First and foremost, passengers should reach out to TAP's Customer Service Team at 800-221-7370 for all pet-related inquiries and reservations. Importantly, it should be noted that only registered service dogs (SVAN) are allowed for transport to the UK. The Customer Service Team at the airport has the right to decide whether your pet travels in the cabin or the hold, based on the pet's weight or the appropriateness of the carrier.

Small cats and dogs can accompany you in the cabin on certain flights, provided they, along with their carriers, don't weigh more than 17 lbs (8 kg). Throughout the flight, pets must stay inside their carriers, positioned under the seat in front of you. Pregnant animals and those not in clean, healthy, and odor-free conditions are not permitted on flights.

Guidance, Tips, & info on Airlines and Airports

Pets can also travel as checked baggage in the hold, provided there's enough room and the aircraft is suitable. The combined weight of the pet and carrier should be under 70 lbs (32 kg) for flights to/from or with stopovers in the USA, Hungary, France, and the Netherlands. For all other TAP Air flights, pets up to 99 lbs (45 kg) can travel in the hold. Make sure your pet has enough food and water for the journey as feeding during flights or stopovers is not possible.

For those pets that exceed weight limitations for checked baggage or need to be transported separately, TAP Air Portugal's Cargo Department facilitates their travel as cargo. For this, specific charges apply based on the combined weight of the animal and carrier.

There are also size restrictions for carriers. In-cabin carriers must be flexible and small enough (15"" x 12"" x 6"" or 40 cm x 33 cm x 17 cm) to fit safely under the seat. For pets in the hold, carriers need to be hard-sided and provided by the passenger. Carriers should allow pets to move around comfortably and must have proper ventilation. A secure and safe carrier with an absorbent material at the bottom is a must.

For those who rely on Emotional Support Animals, TAP Air Portugal allows them in the cabin on most flights, provided they weigh under 17 lbs (8 kg). They should also fit inside a carrier with the same dimensions as other pets in the cabin.

Keep in mind that air carriers can change these policies at any time, so you should always check directly with TAP Air Portugal before you book for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
