Getting Around BHM Airport

The airport features a single terminal building with three concourses: A, B, and C. The terminal is divided into two main levels. The upper level houses ticketing and check-in facilities, a business center, and a large function room. The lower level includes baggage claim facilities, airline baggage offices, airport operations offices, and meeting rooms. Vending machines and ATMs are available throughout both levels, pre-security.

Concourse A, which has eight gates (A1–A8), is used by Delta and American Airlines. It includes U.S. Customs and Immigration facilities for processing international arrivals. Concourse B, with five gates (B1–B5), is also used by American Airlines. Concourse C, which has six gates (C1–C6), is used by Southwest and United Airlines. Each concourse is accessible post-security, and clear signage is provided to guide passengers to their respective gates.

To navigate the terminal efficiently:

  • Follow the clear directional signs to locate ticketing, baggage claim, and gates.
  • Use the available elevators and escalators to move between the upper and lower levels of the terminal.
  • Refer to the airport maps available at information desks or on the airport’s website for detailed navigation.

"Don't rely solely on the airport's Wi-Fi for navigation. Download the airport map beforehand to save time and avoid any connectivity issues." — Emily R., Homewood, AL, February 2024

Amenities & Services

"The Delta Sky Club Lounge is a hidden gem. It's quieter than the main terminal and offers complimentary snacks and beverages, perfect for unwinding before your flight." — Michael T., Mountain Brook, AL, March 2024

"If you need to charge your devices, head to the business center on the upper level. It’s less crowded than the charging stations near the gates." — Sarah L., Vestavia Hills, AL, May 2024

Locations of Security Checkpoint(s)

The Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport has two security checkpoints located on the upper level of the terminal building. One is located near the American Airlines ticket counter, and the other is located near the Delta Airlines ticket counter. Both checkpoints are open from 3:30 AM until the last flight of the day. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled departure time to allow enough time for security screening.

Fast Track Lanes and Locations

There are no dedicated fast track lanes at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport. However, TSA PreCheck is available for eligible passengers, which allows them to go through a dedicated security lane and keep on their shoes, belts, and light jackets, and leave laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags. TSA PreCheck is available at both security checkpoints at the airport.

Passport & Immigration Control Locations

The Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport does not have international flights, so there are no passport and immigration control locations at the airport. However, there is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection office located in downtown Birmingham for those arriving on international flights at other airports in the region.

TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints

At BHM Airport, the TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints are located on the upper level of the terminal, near the entrance to the concourse. The TSA Pre Checkpoint allows eligible passengers to go through expedited security screening, without having to remove shoes, belts, and light jackets, or take laptops and liquids out of their carry-on bags. To enroll in TSA Pre, passengers can apply online and schedule an appointment at an enrollment center, which is conveniently located at the airport.

For real-time security wait times, head over to this security checkpoints page.

Global Entry Locations

The airport is not a Global Entry Enrollment Center, but it does have a Global Entry kiosk, which allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to bypass the regular customs and immigration lines when entering the United States. The Global Entry kiosk is located in the international arrivals area of the terminal, near baggage claim. To enroll in Global Entry, passengers can apply online and schedule an appointment at a nearby enrollment center, such as the one in Atlanta, which is about two hours away by car.

CLEAR Lane Locations

CLEAR Plus lanes are located at the Central Checkpoint on the departures level in front of the security checkpoint.
