Getting Around ROA Airport

The terminal at ROA Airport is a Y-shaped building with a distinctive blue-tinted glass front and white triangular tube steel trusses. The interior features an arched brick wall that leads into a central plaza, providing a straightforward layout for travelers. The main entrance opens into a front courtyard, where you will find the striking 21-foot tall abstract sculpture "Aurora" by artist Albert Paley.

Upon entering the terminal, you'll find the landside facilities, which include check-in counters, car rental services, baggage claim, and taxi hire. These are all located before the TSA security checkpoint. The upper level of the landside area houses a small cafe and a newsstand for your convenience.

Once you pass through the TSA security checkpoint, you enter the airside area, which includes seven gates (Gates 1–6 and 5A) and another small cafe area. The entire terminal offers free Wi-Fi, making it easy to stay connected while you wait for your flight. Navigating the airport is relatively simple due to its compact size and clear signage, ensuring a smooth travel experience.

Security & Screening

In this section, you'll learn about the various security and screening procedures at the airport, including the location of security checkpoints, availability of TSA PreCheck and standard TSA procedures, and information on Global Entry and CLEAR lanes. Additionally, you'll find details on how to enroll in or renew TSA PreCheck for expedited security screening. This comprehensive guide aims to help you navigate the security process smoothly and efficiently.

Locations of Security Checkpoint(s)

Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport has one security checkpoint located on the second floor of the terminal building. Passengers are required to go through security screening before entering the gate area. The checkpoint is equipped with advanced technology to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and their belongings. It is recommended that passengers arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before their scheduled departure time to allow enough time for security screening.

Fast Track Lanes and Locations

Roanoke Airport does not offer fast track lanes for expedited security screening. However, TSA PreCheck is available for eligible passengers. TSA PreCheck allows passengers to go through a separate security screening lane and keep on their shoes, belts, and light jackets, as well as leave laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags. TSA PreCheck is available at the security checkpoint at ROA Airport for eligible passengers who have enrolled in the program.

Passport & Immigration Control Locations

The airport does not have international flights, therefore, there are no passport and immigration control locations at the airport. However, passengers traveling internationally will go through passport and immigration control at their port of entry into the United States.

TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints

ROA has both TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints available for passengers. The TSA Pre Checkpoint allows eligible passengers to move through security more quickly, without having to remove their shoes, belts, or light jackets, and without having to take their laptops or liquids out of their bags. To be eligible for TSA Pre, passengers must apply and be approved through the TSA website or through a participating airline. The standard TSA checkpoint follows the usual security procedures, including removing shoes, belts, and liquids from carry-on bags. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to go through security before their flight.

Global Entry Locations

Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport does not have a Global Entry Enrollment Center on site. However, nearby enrollment centers can be found in cities such as Richmond and Washington, D.C. Global Entry is a program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the United States. To apply for Global Entry, travelers must complete an online application and schedule an in-person interview at an enrollment center. Once approved, travelers can use Global Entry kiosks at select airports to bypass the traditional customs and immigration process. This can save time and make the arrival process smoother for frequent international travelers.

CLEAR Lane Locations

This airport does not currently have CLEAR Lanes. However, you still might be able to use CLEAR if you are traveling to or from another airport that does. You can easily check CLEAR airport locations and learn more about how to save a ton of time on your next trip!

Limited Time CLEAR Offer

In partnership with iFly, you can now get CLEAR for 2 months free! You can enjoy the convenience of CLEAR on your next trip without the hassle and stress of long lines at the TSA checkpoint. Enrollment is fast and easy.
