Getting Around SAN Airport
San Diego International Airport features two main terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, each with distinct concourses. Terminal 1 is divided into East and West concourses, although it's important to note that gates 1, 1A, 2, 3, and 4 have been demolished for new construction. The remaining gates here are numbered 5 through 18. Terminal 2 also splits into East and West concourses and houses a larger number of gates, totaling 32. This terminal additionally offers three lounges: Delta Sky Club, United Club, and Aspire Lounge.
When navigating the airport, consider these tips:
- Check your ticket or the airport displays to confirm which terminal and gate you need. This will save you time and effort, especially since the terminals are not connected post-security.
- If you have a layover or need to switch terminals, you'll need to exit one terminal and re-enter through security at the other. Allow extra time for this transfer.
- Each terminal provides basic amenities such as restrooms and dining options, but for more extensive services like lounges, Terminal 2 is your go-to.

Security & Screening

Locations of Security Checkpoint(s)
San Diego Airport has several security checkpoints located throughout its terminals. Terminal 1 has two security checkpoints, one near the entrance and another near the gates. Terminal 2 has three security checkpoints, one near the entrance, one near the baggage claim, and another near the gates. The Commuter Terminal has one security checkpoint located near the entrance. All security checkpoints are clearly marked and staffed by TSA agents.
Fast Track Lanes and Locations
SAN Airport offers a TSA PreCheck program that allows eligible passengers to use the fast track lanes at security checkpoints. The TSA PreCheck lanes are available at all security checkpoints in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The Commuter Terminal does not have a TSA PreCheck lane. In addition, some airlines offer their own fast track lanes for their premium passengers. These lanes are located near the regular security checkpoints and are clearly marked.
Passport & Immigration Control Locations
Passport and immigration control at the airport is located in the Federal Inspection Services (FIS) area of Terminal 2. This area is accessible only to passengers arriving on international flights. After disembarking the plane, passengers must follow the signs to the FIS area, where they will go through passport control and customs. Once they have cleared customs, they can collect their luggage and exit the terminal. Domestic passengers do not need to go through passport and immigration control.
TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints
SAN has multiple TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints located throughout the airport. TSA Pre Check is a program that allows expedited security screening for eligible travelers. To be eligible, travelers must apply and be approved through the TSA Pre Check program. Once approved, travelers are able to use dedicated TSA Pre Check lanes at participating airports. These lanes typically have shorter wait times and do not require travelers to remove their shoes, belts, or light jackets. San Diego Airport also has standard TSA checkpoints for travelers who have not been approved for TSA Pre Check.

Global Entry Locations
San Diego Airport has a Global Entry Enrollment Center located on-site. Global Entry is a program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. To be eligible, travelers must apply and be approved through the Global Entry program. Once approved, travelers are able to use automated kiosks at participating airports instead of waiting in line for a customs officer. The Global Entry Enrollment Center at SAN Airport allows travelers to complete the application process and interview in one location.

Food, Shops & Services
The airport offers a variety of food and shopping options to make your travel experience more enjoyable. Whether you're looking for a quick bite or a sit-down meal, there are plenty of options to choose from.

San Diego Airport has baggage claim areas located in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Upon arrival, passengers can follow the signs to their designated baggage claim area. Baggage carts are available for use in the baggage claim areas, and airport staff are always on hand to assist with any questions or concerns.
