South Terminal Info & Layout
The South Terminal at London Gatwick Airport is a key hub for handling both domestic and international flights. It features 32 gates equipped with jetbridges and an additional 7 remote gates, making it a significant part of the airport's infrastructure. The terminal originally opened on June 9, 1958, and was one of the first in the world to use an enclosed pier-based design, allowing passengers to move comfortably from the terminal to waiting areas near the aircraft.
Travelers can enjoy a wide range of amenities at the South Terminal, including numerous shops and restaurants located both landside and airside. The terminal is fully accessible to disabled passengers and offers facilities for baby changing and feeding. Business travelers can take advantage of specialized lounges designed to cater to their needs.
Access to the South Terminal is convenient, with a 0.75-mile (1.21 km) elevated, two-way automated people mover connecting it to the North Terminal landside. This system allows for easy transfers between the two terminals, although they are not connected once past security. The South Terminal also features a circular satellite pier connected to the main terminal by a walkway and travelators, replacing the original North Pier's people mover system.
One unique aspect of the South Terminal is its modular design, which has allowed for phased expansions over the years. After a temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Terminal fully reopened in March 2022, continuing its role as a vital part of Gatwick's operations.
