Getting Around FRA Airport

The airport features two main passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, along with a smaller First Class Terminal operated by Lufthansa. Terminal 1 is the larger and older of the two, divided into concourses A, B, C, and Z. This terminal is organized across three levels: the upper level for departures, the ground level for arrivals, and an underground level for access to regional transportation. Terminal 2, opened in 1994, is divided into concourses D and E. Both terminals handle a mix of Schengen and non-Schengen flights, with specific gates dedicated to each.

To navigate between terminals, passengers can use the SkyLine people mover system, which connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The SkyLine has three stops in Terminal 1 (at gates A/Z, B, and C) and one stop in Terminal 2, facilitating quick transfers with a travel time of about 2 minutes. Trains arrive every 2–3 minutes during the day, and each train is divided into airside and landside cars to manage Schengen and non-Schengen passengers separately. Additionally, a regular bus service is available for terminal transfers.

For moving within the terminals, clear signage is provided to guide passengers to their respective gates, check-in counters, and baggage claim areas. Terminal maps and information desks are also available to assist with directions and other inquiries. Passengers should allow ample time to navigate through the airport, especially during peak travel hours.

Frequent Flier Terminal Tips

To help you navigate the airport terminals with ease, we’ve gathered the best advice and tips from FRA-based frequent travelers, flight attendants, pilots, and airport staff. Their first-hand insights will guide you through the terminals for a smoother journey. Here’s what they have to say:

Navigating the Airport

"If you’re connecting through Frankfurt Airport, make sure to use the SkyLine people mover. It’s the quickest way to get between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and trains arrive every 2-3 minutes. Just follow the signs to the SkyLine stops, which are conveniently located near the gates." — Hans M., Wiesbaden, DE, January 2024

"Keep an eye out for the interactive terminal maps scattered throughout the airport. They’re super helpful for finding your gate, restaurants, or lounges. You can even get directions from one location to another, which is a lifesaver during tight connections." — Maria S., Mainz, DE, March 2024

Amenities & Services

"The Lufthansa lounges in Concourse B are some of the best. If you have access, the Senator Lounge offers great food options and a quiet place to relax. Even if you don’t have lounge access, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy." — Felix L., Darmstadt, DE, December 2023

"For a quick freshen-up, the airport has shower facilities in both terminals. They’re a great way to rejuvenate after a long flight or before heading into the city." — Claudia R., Offenbach, DE, February 2024

Security

"If you’re eligible for Fast Track, definitely use it. The lines can be long, especially during peak hours. Fast Track lanes are available in all concourses and can save you a lot of time." — Thomas K., Hanau, DE, April 2024

"Arrive at least two hours before your flight for security. The checkpoints are efficient, but the airport is large, and it can take time to get to your gate, especially if you’re in a different terminal." — Anja W., Bad Homburg, DE, May 2024

Baggage

"Always double-check the flight information displays for your baggage claim area. Frankfurt Airport is well-organized, but it’s easy to get turned around in such a large space." — Lars F., Rüsselsheim, DE, June 2024

"If you have a long layover and don’t want to lug your bags around, use the luggage storage service. It’s available in both terminals and is quite affordable." — Petra H., Aschaffenburg, DE, August 2024
