Helsinki Airport's Terminal 1 is a vital hub for handling both domestic flights and flights to European Schengen countries. With gates numbered 11 through 34, Terminal 1 efficiently manages a significant portion of the airport's passenger traffic, contributing to an overall terminal capacity of approximately 16–17 million passengers per year.
Terminal 1 is home to several major airlines, including Finnair, which operates a considerable number of flights from this terminal. Passengers will find a wide array of amenities designed to enhance their travel experience. These include numerous tax-free shops, car rental services from Avis, Europcar, and Hertz, as well as free wireless Internet access and power sockets for charging devices. Additional conveniences include lockers, sleeping pods, and transfer service desks. For financial services, there are currency exchange facilities, cash machines (ATMs), and a tourist information desk.
Dining options at Terminal 1 cater to a variety of tastes, featuring establishments such as Burger King, O'Learys Sports Bar, and other restaurants and cafés. For those traveling with children, there are several playrooms available to keep young travelers entertained. The terminal also houses two Finnair lounges: the Finnair Lounge in the Schengen area and the Finnair Premium Lounge in the non-Schengen area, offering a comfortable space for relaxation before flights.
Access to Terminal 1 is convenient, with a direct train connection to Helsinki Central railway station, allowing for seamless transit to and from the airport. The terminal is also connected to other areas of the airport through well-marked pedestrian walkways. A unique feature of Helsinki Airport is its pioneering passenger tracking system, which was introduced in 2014. This system automatically monitors crowd congestion and helps prevent bottlenecks, ensuring a smooth flow of passengers throughout the terminal.
Signage throughout Terminal 1 is available in multiple languages, including English, Finnish, Swedish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian, making navigation easy for international travelers.
