Getting Around TYS Airport

McGhee Tyson Airport features a two-level terminal structure that simplifies navigation. When you're inside, the top level is where you'll find all the essentials for your flight—ticket counters, security checkpoints, gates, as well as a variety of dining and shopping options. The design includes a Smoky Mountain theme, which adds an interesting visual element to your wait with features like faux waterfalls and wood carvings of bears.

The lower level of the terminal handles different needs. Here, you can find car rental counters, three baggage claim areas, airline offices, and other airport administrative offices. For moving between the levels, elevators and escalators are available. The airport has a total of 12 gates, which are used by different airlines. It's a good idea to check the gate assignments on your day of travel, as they can change. Gates 2 and 4 are typically used by Allegiant Air, Gate 6 is a common use gate, Gates 8, 10, and 12 by American, Gates 1, 3, and 5 by Delta, and Gates 7, 9, and 11 by United.

Security & Screening

Locations of Security Checkpoint(s)

Knoxville Airport has two security checkpoints located on the upper level of the terminal. The first checkpoint is located near the Delta and United Airlines ticket counters, while the second checkpoint is located near the American Airlines ticket counter. Both checkpoints are open from 4:00 AM until the last flight of the day.

Fast Track Lanes and Locations

There are no dedicated fast track lanes at TYS Airport. However, TSA PreCheck is available at both security checkpoints for eligible passengers. TSA PreCheck allows expedited screening for trusted travelers, allowing them to keep on their shoes, belts, and light jackets, and keep their laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags.

Passport & Immigration Control Locations

The airport does not have international flights, so there are no passport or immigration control locations within the terminal.

TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints

TYS has TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints to ensure the safety and security of all passengers. TSA Pre Check is a program that allows pre-approved travelers to go through expedited security screening, which means they do not have to remove their shoes, belts, or laptops from their bags. This program is available to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. To apply for TSA Pre Check, travelers must complete an online application and schedule an appointment for an in-person interview at an enrollment center.

Global Entry Locations

Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport has a Global Entry Enrollment Center, which is a program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Global Entry members can use automated kiosks to complete their customs declaration and biometric scanning, which means they can skip the long lines at customs. To apply for Global Entry, travelers must complete an online application and schedule an appointment for an in-person interview at an enrollment center. The enrollment center at Knoxville Airport is located in the main terminal, near baggage claim.

Baggage Claim Areas

Upon arrival at the airport, passengers can easily locate the baggage claim areas. There are two baggage claim carousels located on the lower level of the terminal. Passengers should check the flight information display screens to determine which carousel their luggage will be on. Once passengers have retrieved their luggage, they can proceed to the ground transportation area to continue their journey.

TYS has two levels. The upper level handles ticket counters, security, and gates. The lower level includes baggage claim, car rental counters, and administrative offices.
