Getting Around IAD Airport
The airport features a main terminal and two parallel midfield terminal buildings, known as Concourses A/B and C/D. The main terminal houses ticketing, baggage claim, and customs facilities, with four original gates designated as "Z" gates. Concourses A and B are closer to the main terminal, while Concourses C and D are located further away. The entire terminal complex includes 139 gates, with 123 equipped with jetways and 16 hardstand locations for boarding via mobile lounges.
For inter-terminal transportation, the AeroTrain system is the primary mode of travel, connecting the main terminal to Concourses A, B, and C. The AeroTrain does not serve Concourse D directly; passengers must use a mobile lounge for this concourse. The AeroTrain station for Concourse C is situated north of the concourse, requiring a walk to reach the gates. Additionally, a passenger tunnel links the main terminal to Concourses A and B. Mobile lounges are still in use for transporting international passengers to the International Arrivals Building and for boarding aircraft at hardstand locations.
Travelers can navigate the airport efficiently by following clear signage and utilizing the AeroTrain for quick transfers between terminals. Information kiosks are available throughout the main terminal to assist with directions and other inquiries. For those needing additional assistance, airport staff are readily available to provide guidance and support.
