Getting Around TPA Airport

The airport features a unique Landside/Airside terminal design, where a central Landside Terminal handles baggage and ticketing functions. This central hub is connected to four separate Airside terminals (A, C, E, and F) via an elevated automated people mover (APM) system. Each Airside terminal is equipped with its own gates, food courts, gift shops, and in some cases, duty-free shops for international travelers.

To move between the Landside Terminal and any of the Airside terminals, passengers can use the automated people mover system. This system is fully automated and driver-free, ensuring quick and efficient transport. The APM system operates continuously, reducing wait times and making it easy to navigate between different parts of the airport.

Here are some tips for getting around:

  • Check the terminal map upon arrival to familiarize yourself with the layout.
  • Follow the signage to locate the APM stations, which are clearly marked and easy to find.
  • Allow extra time if you need to transfer between Airsides, especially during peak travel times.

Frequent Flier Terminal Tips

To help you navigate the airport terminals with ease, we’ve gathered the best advice and tips from TPA-based frequent travelers, flight attendants, pilots, and airport staff. Their first-hand insights will guide you through the terminals for a smoother journey. Here’s what they have to say:

Navigating the Airport

"If you’re transferring between Airsides, the automated people mover (APM) is a lifesaver. It’s fast and efficient, but make sure to check the terminal map as soon as you arrive to familiarize yourself with the layout." — Maria S., Clearwater, FL, December 2023

"For those with tight connections, remember that Airside F is the international terminal. If you’re arriving on an international flight and connecting domestically, give yourself at least 90 minutes to clear customs and reach your next gate." — John D., St. Petersburg, FL, January 2024

Amenities & Services

"The Delta Sky Club in Airside E is a great spot to relax before your flight. They offer complimentary snacks and high-speed Wi-Fi. If you have a long layover, it’s worth the visit." — Emily R., Tampa, FL, February 2024

"Don’t miss the Cigar City Brewing in the main terminal if you have some extra time. It’s a great place to grab a local craft beer and a bite to eat." — Carlos M., Brandon, FL, March 2024

"If you’re traveling with pets, the pet relief areas are clearly marked and easy to find. There’s one in each Airside, which is really convenient." — David K., Wesley Chapel, FL, July 2024

Locations of Security Checkpoint(s)

Tampa International Airport has multiple security checkpoints located throughout the airport. The main checkpoint is located on the third level of the Main Terminal, near the entrance to Airsides A, C, and F. There are also additional checkpoints located in Airsides A, C, and E. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled departure time to allow enough time to go through security.

Fast Track Lanes and Locations

Tampa International Airport offers a Fast Track program for passengers who want to expedite their security screening process. Fast Track lanes are available at the main security checkpoint on the third level of the Main Terminal, as well as in Airsides A, C, and E. The program is available to all passengers for a fee and can be purchased online or at the airport. Fast Track passengers are able to bypass the regular security lines and go through a dedicated lane, which typically results in a faster screening process.

Passport & Immigration Control Locations

Passport and immigration control at Tampa International Airport is located in the Main Terminal, near the baggage claim area. All international passengers are required to go through passport and immigration control upon arrival in the United States. The airport has several Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks available to expedite the process for eligible passengers. These kiosks allow passengers to complete their customs declaration and biometric scan electronically, which can save time and reduce wait times in line.

TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints

At Tampa Airport, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operates several checkpoints to ensure the safety and security of all passengers. These checkpoints include both standard TSA checkpoints and TSA PreCheck checkpoints. TSA PreCheck is a program that allows eligible passengers to enjoy expedited screening, which means they can keep their shoes, belts, and light jackets on, and their laptops and liquids in their bags. To be eligible for TSA PreCheck, passengers must apply for and be approved for the program.

Global Entry Locations

Tampa Airport is home to a Global Entry Enrollment Center, which is located in the Main Terminal on Level 3. Global Entry is a program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the United States. To apply for Global Entry, travelers must complete an online application and schedule an interview at an enrollment center. The Tampa Airport location makes it easy for travelers in the area to apply for and enroll in the program.
